For My Mama
Katie Dean, May 10 2023
Mother's Day is a truly special day that gives us the opportunity to show our moms just how much they mean to us. This is the day we celebrate the women who gave us life, the women who fed and clothed us, and the women who supported us through all of our triumphs and struggles. Like my Mom-Hi Mom! Love you!
On Mother's Day, we get to honor and cherish the person who taught us how to tie our shoes, prepare a meal with love and care, drive a car and all the other things! We get to show appreciation for all of the sacrifices our moms have made over the years, the times they stayed up late helping us finish our homework, and the unconditional love they have always shown us.
It's a day when we get to pamper our moms and make them feel like the special, incredible people they are. We might take them out for a fancy meal, spoil them with gifts (like jewelry!), or just spend quality time with them. Whatever you do the most important thing is making Mother's Day about your gratitude and love for her. It's about recognizing the tireless work and dedication of our moms, who often put our needs before their own. It's about saying thank you for the countless ways they have shaped us into the people we are today.
I love the photo below of my mom documenting our Scrabble game board, it really shows how fun she is! I also love how chill and friendly my Mom is and how easy she laughs. Her positivity is contagious and everyone who has met her and knows her feels the same. Besides her fun-loving attitude toward people and life in general she is incredibly hard working. My Mom is a business owner herself as well as a family doctor which you can read about here. During our visits we always carve out time to play board games and put together puzzles, two of our favorite things to do together besides having movie nights, going on walks and cooking at home.
As most of you know my husband and I are welcoming a baby girl in July and it has truly changed me in the best way. I'm finally grasping the saying, "You'll understand when you become a parent". Already I'm thinking about the art projects I want to do with her and how much I want to cuddle her and teach her. I've always valued my Mom tremendously but become a mom myself has made my love for her grow even more and I'm beyond thankful for everything she has done for me.
I remember when I first moved to Los Angeles a year after graduating high school my Mom made a box full of little wrapped up presents that each had an inspirational message. She told me that whenever I had a bad day or felt like giving up to open up one up and keep moving forward. While I have great memories of my beginnings as an artist in LA, it was really challenging so needless to say I made it through the entire box and each little present from my Mom changed my perspective.
She helped me to look on the bright side and feel grateful for the love and support my entire family showed me instead of feeling sorry for myself when times got tough. Don't get me wrong, I still made plenty of tearful calls to my Mom and my grandparents but with the encouragement from them I kept going and I did achieve my dreams.
Each day as I get closer to the new adventure of motherhood with my growing family I am filled with excitement to create cherished memories with my daughter just like my Mom did and still does with me.
So, to all the moms out there: Happy Mother's Day!
You are deeply loved and valued. I'm grateful for all that you do and thank you for being the amazing moms that you are!
