A Look Inside Our Jewelry Photoshoots, Plus Some Small Business Tips
Katie Dean, March 13 2024
Diving into the behind-the-scenes magic of our jewelry shoots is always a thrill for me, and today, I'm bringing you right into the heart of it. When we bring our models in, it's not just about styling them with our dainty pieces from the KDJ collection; it's about creating a vibe, a feeling, a connection. It's about seeing our gorgeous pieces come to life on the equally beautiful women wearing them.
In the images throughout this blogpost, you'll see me in my element, tweaking the stacked up rings or earrings ever so slightly, ensuring they are styled perfectly. It's these little adjustments that make all the difference, that turn a simple shot into something captivating. Before starting my jewelry line I had no idea what went into creating product imagery that would inspire someone to not only take a moment to look at the photograph but actually go to the product page to discover more about the piece and ultimately purchase the piece. This is such an art form! My hat goes off to the wardrobe and set stylists of the world. It makes such a difference when someone is putting their creativity into styling the image that will be captured. I believe that is how brands can create such a strong connection with their customers online even if the customer has never before seen the product in real life. Powerful to say the least.
Flatlays are my jam — they're like composing a visual symphony where each piece of jewelry is a note that needs to hit just right. As you can see in the image below, my hands are busy styling our Birthstone Necklaces. And when I say ‘busy’ I mean they are ever so gently adjusting the delicate chains of the necklaces so they sit just right. It’s a delicate process, arranging each piece so they can be captured with perfect lighting all while evoking the essence of our brand: simple, elegant, and effortlessly cool.
I've learned that with dainty jewelry especially, getting the details right within the styling of each image is essential. It's almost painstaking how meticulous and attentive I am to the details of the jewelry, I praise the photographers who have worked with me because lord knows they have to be patient as I go in for the tenth adjustment for one flatlay image. I'm sure other designers are the same and I've learned to embrace it and keep my integrity in when it comes to my creative vision. Anytime I've let something go without changing it to fit my original vision I've regretted it - whether that was during the design process of the piece, the styling of the jewelry in a flatlay or when layering up the jewelry on a model. If it doesn't feel right my advice to any artist or designer is: don't have any regrets or let someone change your mind, take the time to make it right! You are the one leading the charge as the designer.
I like to think that each photo we take tells a story. From the soft focus on our models to the strategic lighting that makes every piece pop and show off the intricate detailing that was designed into it. I try to focus on showcasing the jewelry in its most authentic but best light. So many customers have told me over the years that the jewelry is even more beautiful in person which is soooo sweet and really makes me smile. I've also learned that perfection isn't about the absence of flaws, but the presence of authenticity. We strive for images that resonate, that feel real, that you can see yourself in.
PRO TIP: I've found that creating 'evergreen' content is also key. As a small business, we aim for timeless over trendy, ensuring each image transcends seasons. Like our jewelry, the photos are crafted to be cherished year-round and looked at again and again for inspiration. And as a small business who needs to watch cashflow very closely, creating evergreen content is a way to make your money go a long way. Businesses can drown in bills with marketing expenses, trust me, I've been there and you don't want your business to go under because it can't pay its bills. So be wise and creative with a frugal eye on your spending. It will make a huge difference on your bottom line.
I hope you enjoyed this peek behind the curtain as much as I loved pulling it back. I hope it inspires you to not only layer up some new jewels but also gives you a connection to the brand - there are real people behind KDJ, and each of us wants you to enjoy our content, products and live life to the fullest. So let this be a point of inspiration for you to go out and start your own project, even if it's just for yourself.
Lastly, we'd love to hear from you. What's your favorite piece from the collection these days? Anything you would like us to capture in our future shoots that you haven't seen lately?
Stay golden, stay you.
XOXO, Katie
